You Made the Children Shout for Joy about Safe Water

The banner used to dedicate a new well at a school in Port Loko District in Sierra Leone arrived in Rock Island just in time for the end of a winning season by the Augustana College Women’s Lacrosse team. Jim Kopel, who was instrumental in our fundraising campaign to send a portable drilling rig to Sierra Leone, is a huge fan of the team. He dedicated a well to the Women’s Lacrosse Team. What an impact that drilling rig is making!

In 2015, Mariatu’s Hope drilled 14 boreholes. Three were were at schools. Four were in communities that had at least one overused hand pump. Seven wells were drilled in villages with absolutely no water source except the stream or the swamp. In those seven villages, people said things like, “for as long as I have lived and my grandparents and their grandparents have lived, no one has ever tasted well water in this village” or “you have removed the taste of swamp water from my mouth.” WOW!!! For 2016, Mariatu’s Hope is slated to drill 17 new wells.

It’s impossible to overestimate how much difference safe water makes for children’s futures. Thank you, Jim and the Augustana College Women’s Lacrosse team. There’s the Augie Viking in the midst of cheering children.
